More about the release

You’re invited… to submit to the forthcoming Car Crash Collective anthology!

Who: In 2021, Brittany Menjivar was hit by two semi trucks in a car accident that left her inches from death. The first time she ever hung out with Erin Satterthwaite, she told her this story... and minutes later, Erin's car was totaled in a collision involving an Uber driver at a Hollywood intersection. Forever bonded by their trauma—and, of course, their love of literature—they founded Car Crash Collective, a late-night poetry and prose reading series based in Los Angeles.

What: A collection of writing by authors who have presented their work at Car Crash Collective, plus other authors whose work we admire. Although there is no strict theme for the anthology, we encourage writers to take inspiration from the destructive and generative potential of the car crash, or from the following quotes:

“These wounds formed the key to a new sexuality, born from a perverse technology.” -Crash, J.G. Ballard “The car crash is a fertilizing rather than a destructive event.” -Crash, dir. David Cronenberg

For poetry submissions: please send up to 3 poems to carcrashla@gmail.com For prose submissions (fiction, creative nonfiction, etc.): please send up to 10 pages of writing to carcrashla@gmail.com.

Where: Print copies of the anthology will be published via Metalabel.

When: Submissions are due by the end of September. We aim to release the anthology in December.

Why: After one year of Car Crash Collective, we’d like to celebrate our history—and look toward our future—by creating a tribute to our wonderful readers that they can hold in their hands. We’d also like to make the magic of Car Crash Collective accessible to readers who don’t live in a city where we host events.

Release parties for the book will take place in Los Angeles and New York.
